Volunteer Spotlight: Beth Hahn
After 36 years of public service, Beth Hahn wasn’t ready to slow down—she was ready to give back in a new way. What started as a desire to make a difference close to home has become a meaningful rhythm of service, connection, and community at WARM. In this conversation, Beth shares what drew her to WARM, the moments that stay with her, and why volunteering continues to warm her heart.
After 36 years in a federal government career, what led you to volunteer at WARM?
After retiring, I knew I wanted to stay active and find a meaningful way to give back—ideally right here in my community. About a year and a half ago, I discovered WARM and immediately felt like it was the right fit. I started volunteering two days a week, and it quickly became something I looked forward to.
What kinds of roles have you taken on as a volunteer?
One of the things I love most is the variety. I’ve helped with dry goods stocking, client support, order confirmation, shopping for fresh and dry goods, and even cooler support. No two days are exactly the same. I also really enjoy interacting directly with people—both neighbors who drop off donations and clients who come in needing emergency food.
“Volunteering here truly warms my heart. Serving people with understanding and empathy—and doing it alongside such kind staff and volunteers—reminds me every day why this work matters.”
Why are those personal interactions so meaningful to you?
Those moments matter because they remind me that this work is about people, not just processes. Making personal connections helps ensure we’re truly serving individuals based on their real needs, not just what we assume they might need. There’s a lot of dignity in that.
What changes have you noticed recently at WARM?
I’ve seen both an increase in the need for emergency food and an incredible rise in generosity. The community response has been amazing. Just recently, in one Friday afternoon alone, we logged nearly 3,000 pounds of donated food. It’s inspiring to see how people show up when they know their neighbors need help.
Is there a moment during your shifts that stands out to you?
Absolutely. Every morning shift starts with a volunteer huddle that always ends in prayer. That moment touches me every single time. It fills me with gratitude and sets the tone for the day—it’s a reminder of why we’re here and who we’re serving.
How would you describe your experience volunteering at WARM overall?
Volunteering here truly warms my heart. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to serve people with understanding and empathy. It’s incredibly rewarding to know we’re making a positive impact, and the volunteers and staff are genuinely kind. This place feels like community in the truest sense.
